Tomorrow is the Terry Fox Run!
We are looking forward to meeting our families at the Terry Fox Run. Please come and run with your children and meet the teachers. Feel free to join us at our quick assembly tomorrow at 2:00 in the gym before joining our run. Alternatively, you can meet us in the school parking lot where food trucks will be on hand for a snack (after the run). The food trucks that will be on site are: Family Squeezed Food Trucks with fries, hot dogs, ice cream, mini donuts and more!! Please consider supporting our Terry Fox Run using the button below. We learned about subtraction, thought about our wonders, and continued in our coding course. Grade 3 and 4 students also participated in an egg-cellent challenge this week. They were given the task to create a rocket that would land without cracking its precious cargo. We also enjoyed watching a funny juggler, who introduced us to Beakerhead. We had fun with Mike Dorion (The Worm Guy), who talked to us about vermi-composting and allowed us to meet his worms. Finally, we had a wonderful time on our Beakerhead field trip, where we attended the Turbulence Lab, Loose Parts Lab, and High Voltage Lab. A very special thank you to all the volunteers who were able to join us in the cold today! Check out the slideshow for pictures of our adventurous week! This is a reminder that we have a field trip on Thursday! Please be aware that this is an outdoor activity - rain or shine. It is very important that the students are dressed appropriately, with jackets, boots, hats etc. I have attached the field trip consent form and the volunteer form below. Please make sure that all forms are turned in on Thursday morning. We still have some Grade 4's who have not turned in their form.
We are so excited to have STEM Learning Lab back this school year! They are offering After School Camps on Fridays for our students in Rideau Park School from grades 1-9! We have seen many interesting STEM games, robot building (such as the Canadarm project), Maker design projects, and wearable tech clothing. We cannot wait to see what else our students will invent and create throughout the rest of this year! If you are interested in having your child joining, please read below for more information.
Note from STEM Learning Lab: Looking to register for STEM Learning Lab? Children will participate in creative coding, maker and art projects, and will play various outdoor games and activities. In the Creative Coding program, children will have fun as they build and code their own apps, games and animations. During the Maker and Art projects, children will hone their creative skills as they make fun hands-on projects using everyday materials, circuits and things they fin on nature walks. All children will have the opportunity to participate in all activities offered. In addition to our special activities, we have daily routines. Daily activities include outdoor play, games, snack time, and free-time where kids can play board games, read, do art projects or even homework if desired. We continued our study of community - Grade 4’s discussed heroes in our community and wrote about their own heroic journey. We also began our study of place value and discussed the importance of understanding the value of each digit. Next week, we will be working on multi-digit addition and subtraction.
The Grade 4’s also worked with Grade 3 to design a prototype solving or improving a problem at school. Students created finger print locks, robots, water bottle holders, extended rulers, and more! We also created a marble maze. Please enjoy some of the examples in the slideshow below. Next week will be another busy week! Following are some important dates to note:
I hope that you have each received your child’s field trip form. Please have them returned by Tuesday, September 18. We are looking for five volunteers to come with us on our field trip! Please contact me at [email protected] if you would like to join us. We will be departing Rideau Park by bus at 9:40 a.m. and returning to the school by bus at 1:00 p.m. (you do not need to join us for the bus ride). This week, the Grade 4’s did an excellent job of settling into our new routines!
Our focus has been community, both within the classroom and the school. With Grade 3, we discussed the various aspects of a community and we designed our own city. We will continue to be community builders! We have also begun to problem solve! The Grade 4’s were given alphabet letters with dollar values (skip counting by ten) and responded to the following questions:
For more information about our week, please read your child’s T.W.A.S. journal (This Week At School). In this journal, you will also find reflections about what we are reading at school. I encourage students to bring books from home, as well! We have a new parent rep! Joanne Nielson will be helping to organize our classroom and working with parent council. If you would like to be added to her class email list (and you were not here last year) please send her quick email - [email protected]. Don’t forget to check out our agenda for assignments, due dates, and reminders! I look forward to reading your Parent Survey and getting to know more about your child. |
